DPIIT recognition is the government's official "startup" tag, available to eligible entities up to ten years from incorporation and below the turnover ceiling. It is free, online, and usually quick.
What it unlocks: eligibility to apply for the Section 80-IAC tax holiday, the ESOP perquisite tax deferral for your employees, self-certification under several labour and environment laws, faster and cheaper IP filings, easier public procurement access, and eligibility for the Fund of Funds/seed schemes.
For most genuine startups the answer is simply yes — there is no meaningful downside, and two of the benefits (80-IAC and the ESOP deferral) can be worth real money. Recognition is a prerequisite, not the benefit itself: 80-IAC needs a separate approval.
